Introduction

1. Feeding
The cycle begins with "feeding." When the magazine is filled with ammunition and inserted, it holds a stack of cartridges under spring tension. As the slide moves forward, it strips the top cartridge from the magazine and guides it up the feed ramp into the chamber, preparing it for firing.
2. Chambering
This happens when the slide pushes the cartridge up the feed ramp and seats it completely in the chamber, placing it correctly for ignition at the rear of the barrel.
3. Locking
Before the gun can safely fire, the barrel and slide must lock together. This step ensures the breech is closed and capable of containing the high-pressure gas produced by firing. Most semi-automatic handguns use a mechanical locking system, such as the tilting barrel design, to achieve this.
4. Firing
When the trigger is pulled, it releases the hammer or striker, striking the firing pin. The firing pin then impacts the primer of the cartridge. This ignites the gunpowder, creating high-pressure gas that propels the bullet down the barrel and out of the muzzle.
5. Unlocking
As the bullet exits the barrel and pressure drops inside the chamber, the slide and barrel unlock from each other. This is typically accomplished by the barrel tilting downward, slightly, and moving away from the slide.
6. Extracting
Once unlocked, the slide moves rearward, powered by the recoil momentum. The extractor, a small hook on the slide, grabs the rim of the spent cartridge case and pulls it out of the chamber.
7. Ejecting
As the slide continues its rearward travel, the base of the spent case strikes the ejector—a fixed metal piece inside the frame—which flicks the case out of the ejection port, clearing the way for the next round.
8. Cocking
During its rearward movement, the slide also re-cocks the hammer or striker, resetting the firing mechanism for the next shot.
In Battery
The recoil spring pushes the slide forward, readying the pistol for the next semi-automatic shot. As the slide advances, it loads the next cartridge from the magazine into the chamber. When the slide if fully locked forward, the pistol is “In Battery”, and the handgun is now ready to fire again with the next pull of the trigger.
